From Trancoso, in the heart of Portugal's Beira Alta region, comes Padre Costa Piri-Piri, a distinctive Portuguese speciality brought to you by Casa da Prisca, a family-rooted producer whose gastronomic heritage dates back to 1917.

But what makes this little bottle truly memorable is the extraordinary legend behind its name. According to local legend, Padre Costa lived in Trancoso during the 15th century and was said to have fathered an astonishing 299 children with 53 women.

The story tells of a colourful and controversial life that eventually brought him before the authorities. According to the account associated with the legend, Padre Costa was attributed 29 goddaughters, 9 comadres, 7 amas, 2 enslaved women belonging to his own mother, 5 sisters and one aunt, in addition to his own mother. In 1487, he was reportedly sentenced to death for his libertine lifestyle. However, King João II is said to have pardoned him and ordered him, on 7 March of that year, to be sent to the House of Marco, in recognition of his contribution to the settlement of the Beira Alta region.

Whether scandalous history or colourful local folklore, the tale of Padre Costa has endured through the centuries. Today, his name lives on in this distinctive Portuguese piri-piri, bringing a little spice, a little mischief and a memorable story to the table.
